Junior Sharks Have Bite
On Saturday 5 December 2009, Solway Sharks Under 14s and Under 16s entertained Elgin at Dumfries Ice Bowl.
The Under 14s were first out of the blocks endeavouring to overcome a defeat at the hands of Elgin in an away fixture earlier in the season. The game was an incredibly tense affair with Elgin taking the lead in the nineteenth minute. The first period drew to a close with Calum Hepburn making a number of fine saves in the Solway net. Clearly
roused from their half time team talk, the Under 14s came out fighting
and in the twenty third minute Ryan Patterson finished calmly following
excellent work from Connor Henderson. The Junior Sharks then incurred a number of penalties with Ryan Patterson serving four minutes and Connor Caven a further two. The Elgin forwards then took advantage and scored a second goal in the twenty seventh minute. Not to be outdone the Sharks responded quickly with Josh Grieveson and Jack Stephenson combining well to set Stuart Kerr free who then finished with the style of an accomplished goal scorer. Again Calum Hepburn in the net was called upon to make a number of fine saves as the game drew to a close finishing Sharks 2 - Elgin 2. The man of the match for Solway Sharks Under 14s was Captain Josh Grieveson.
Next up was Solway Under 16s who are now sponsored by Alchemist Technologies. Clearly
out to impress their new sponsor the Under 16s simply flew out of the
blocks with goals from Joe Coulter, Calum Henderson (2) and Connor
McCallum sending the Sharks into a 4 – 0 lead within the first twenty
minutes. Despite the valiant efforts of net minder Grant Scott, Elgin
pulled a goal back in the sixteenth minute, however the Alchemist
Technologies Sharks were clearly under control during the first period. The
second period was much the same with a further two goals from the
Sharks without reply from Daniel Fleming and Ryan Crawford resulting in
a convincing 6 – 1 home win. The man of the match for the Solways Sharks Under 16s was Connor McCallum.
On Sunday 6 December both the Under 14s and the Under 16s entertained North Ayr at home. Both games had the potential to be very difficult encounters and this proved to be the case. First up were the Under 14s who went into a lead in the twelfth minute with a goal from the prolific Connor Henderson ably assisted by Jack Stevenson. This
lead was doubled just before the break, with North Ayr’s Louis Manson
sat in the penalty box, Sharks’ power play took advantage with
Grieveson and Stevenson combining well with Connor Henderson to set Scott Henderson free to score. The
Sharks then dominated the remaining period and North Ayr’s net minder
Calum Donnachie was in inspired form to keep the final score Sharks 2 –
North Ayr 0. The man of the match for the Solway Sharks was Connor Henderson.
Finally the Alchemist Technology Sharks Under 16s took to the ice against a very strong North Ayr side in what was to be a tough encounter. With Connor McCallum being sent to the penalty box for boarding the North Ayr side took the lead in the seventh minute with a power play goal scored by Ben Jackson. The game remained extremely tight with Kyle Kirkpatrick, Charlie Lauder and Calum Henderson all going close for the Sharks. During the second period the North Ayr side took control as the Junior Sharks were sent to the penalty box with increasing frequency. Net minder Grant Scott made a number of outstanding saves in the second period but with Joseph Coulter and Josh Grieveson
in the penalty box the North Ayr side took advantage of their numerical
supremacy scoring twice, the final score being Solway 1 – North Ayr 3. The man of the match for the Solway Sharks was net minder Grant Scott.
The Solway Sharks Junior Ice Hockey Club would
like to thank Alchemist Technologies for their tremendous sponsorship
and support for the Under 16s Team.
